Swallows, beleived to bring hapiness and luck to a household. It also signifies protection to a family. These migratory birds, for the Portuguese have a symbolism attached. We have recurrent waves of emigration in wich the Portuguese always fought to provide a better life to their loved ones, even when implicated to be away from their country and their traditions. BUt, just like a swallow, no matter what, we woudl return home.
Family
The swallows also have one partner for life, therefore they represent LOVE, LOYALTY and FAITHFULNESS.
In 1891, Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro designed the first ceramic swallows. Many followed this romantic view, and swallows are part of our culture being displayed in every corner of Portugal.

The 3 Bordalo Pinheiro ceramic swallows that I have in my porch have attracted real ones!! They've nested and had baby swallows and every spring they return, which makes me feel very happy! It's a very caring animal&symbol for me
